Just because you currently have a Pokémon in your Pokedex does not mean it's not worth capturing. Catch a Pikachu: Like the initial games, when you start playing Pokemon Go, you can select one of three Pokemon as your first company: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. But there is a concealed fourth option, also: Pikachu. To get a Pikachu, you simply need just a little patience. You have to blow off the first three Pokemon presented to you by Professor Willow and simply walk away. The three Pokemon will follow you around for a bit after which disappear before reappearing. Do this four times, and a Pikachu will eventually show up. Then you definitely get it. Catching Pikachu doesn't seem to have a tactical edge since you will likely encounter stronger ones later on, but why miss an opportunity to hang out from the outset?
There are tons of articles out there already about gameplay and how the AR functions, etc., etc. And there are probably lots of local shops shooting queries up the chain about what the heck all these folks are doing standing in their own parking lot looking at their telephones.
I've got two angles:
In spite of crippling server issues and ghastly discoveries, Pokemon Go has soared to the top of app charts, added billions to the market value of Nintendo, and sold millions of dollars of Pokeballs and other virtual goods, as folks engage in nostalgia for the initial Pokemon games and discover the joys of playing games in public.
A very helpful item for leveling up is the Lucky Egg. Using an egg sets off a 30-minute timer, during which you will gain double experience points. Be sure to use this wisely by consulting the table above to see which high-XP tasks you can complete in that 30-minute window. You might time a Lucky Egg with several Pokemon evolutions, or alongside a bait that sends lots of Pokemon your method, to get the most bang for your buck.
Pokemon Go is a little different from earlier games in the series because the Pokemon trainer---the small character you make at the beginning of the game---gains experience points to raise his or her level. In the original games, each Pokemon has its experience points and amount, but not so in Go.
Throw a curve ball: Curveballs are not just fashionable, they also raise a player's skill points if the technique results in a capture. To initiate a curve ball, move your finger in small circles on the display while touching the ball after which toss it. It's still uncertain if curveballs raise the chances of catching a Pokemon, though they do give you an XP bonus. Some players say that's the case, while others report it's tougher.
How exactly to throw a Pokball: Unlike the original games, you do not battle wild Pokemon in Go. Instead, you leap straight to capturing them, which simply means flicking a Pokball on your telephone display at a Pokemon. Chuck it too close or too much, and the Pokball will not do anything. You have to get it just right by really hitting the Pokemon. When you press on a Pokball, a ring shows up around the Pokemon. A green ring means the Pokemon is simple to catch, while a red one means it is tougher to catch. The rings also change in size as you hold down a Pokball. Your chances are improved, notably for more difficult-to-grab Pokemon, if the ring is smaller when you release the Pokball.
We replied Red, to which he nodded his head. "Great." I was relieved -- for a second the whole AR thing looked like it might've headed in a too-actual direction if we'd answered the wrong color.
Find nearby Pokemon: To see what Pokemon are lurking nearby, have a look at the bottom-right corner of your screen. Clicking that menu will reveal outlines of up to nine nearby Pokemon, along with one to three footprints underneath each of them. The fewer footprints there are, the closer the Pokemon is. The Pokemon in this menu is, in addition, sorted by the distance. The one on the top-left is closest to you while the one on the bottom-right is farthest.
I capped off my in depth experience with a trip to the local mall (Park Meadows in Lonetree, CO), where I imagine about a third of the foot traffic in that mall on a sleepy Monday afternoon was Pokemon Go traffic. Yeah, third. And hey! I am a level 6 now!
